Schoolreaders
Do you have an hour a week to help local children in Darwen with their reading and comprehension skills?
Schoolreaders volunteers are matched with a local primary school and visit weekly during term time for an hour or two, where they listen to children read individually and help to develop their reading and comprehension skills. They will also hopefully develop the children's interest in reading for pleasure too as this has a huge impact on the child's access to their secondary education and future life chances.
Our volunteers enjoy being part of the school community and feel that they are making a difference to the children that they work with.
Schoolreaders has partner schools in Darwen that we would match you with. We ask our volunteers to complete an online application form (although we can send a copy by post) and then have a short telephone interview where you have the opportunity to find out some more about the opportunity and we can find out a little more about you.
Our volunteers do not need an prior experience or specific skills but do need to be over 18 and have good written and spoken English. Volunteers will also need to have an enhanced DBS check carried out but this is completed by the school and at no cost to the volunteer.
